Actually the word itself is trademarked (along with the logo in plain typeface). However that doesn't mean you would be in breach of their trademark, and as previously mentioned IMVU Mafias has been allowed to operate for many years.

I would definitely recommend Lushlalily for female (and some guy) clothes. Seems she mostly does female tops but there's some decent for-the-dude stuff there as well. Good quality textures and pretty unique. Some of its retextures but you know she kind of puts a lot effort into it.

Answer and Xoi are awesome creators for poses!
Vibor (formally Vibore) has a great section of avatars! (only works on female avis)
Whims has a huge selection of rooms
Nahty has a ton of really good female clothes
PixelMe has good stuff...a ton of female clothes there
J4DED has some good clothes too (both female and male but mostly female)
