Click here to see an example of an exploding planet.
Text
1) Open GIMP.
2) Go to File>New and the size does not matter much as long as it is not extremely small and it is a square, 700*700 or 500*500 would be good [You can choose the background to be transparent if you want].
3) You will need a dirt texture, go to images on google type "dirt texture" and choose which one seems better to you, I used this one in the example.
4) Download the texture on your computer.
5) Go to file>Open As Layers and choose your dirt texture.
6) The dirt texture will open in a new layer, choose that layer and resize/scale it to the size of your first layer.
7) Then go to Filters>Map>Map Object, select "Map To Sphere", choose the background of the mapped object to be transparent, click on the light settings select "No Light" and then select "OK".
8) Go to colors>Invert
9) Go to Filters>Distorts>Polar Coordinates and uncheck the "To Polar" option, then click "OK".
10) Go to "rotate" and make your layer [which is currently on top] go to the left or right of the screen. [Note, rotate by 90 degrees either to the left or to the right]
11) Go to Filters>Distorts>Wind, choose the direction to be on the right if you moved your layer to the right and left if you moved the layer to the left. Set the "strength" to "30" and the "Threshold" to "7".
12) Rotate your layer to the opposite direction that you rotated it last time.
13) Go to Filters>Distorts>Polar Coordinates and check the "Top Polar" option.
14) Choose the gradient tool, select the "Incandescent" gradient, then go to Colors>Map>Gradient Map and you've made an exploding planet.
15) You can keep your first layer as a background if you'd like or you could just delete it if you want.
16) Save as .png
